Summer 2022 fashion show

We believe that educating girls through art and commerce can have a lasting impact on communities. Regardless of a student’s education background or previous exposure to the arts, we offer all campers an inclusive and unforgettable experience in creativity. These students develop new skills that they can access for years to come.

Our six-week program in the U.S. brings young girls between the ages of 8-14 together in a creative space where they learn the art of sewing and design. Since 2005, this experience has proven to be effective in helping our students discover their true passion. Each stage of the design process is handled with care to demonstrate the outcomes of dedication and hard work. Our two-week camp teaches machine sewing, introduces students to design concepts and portfolio development, and encourages team building. We celebrate their accomplishments with a final fashion show. Each summer, the BayGanda team looks forward to seeing our students' confidence and creativity reach new heights.

DURING CAMP

TIE-DYE PROJECT

A large part of our process is creating our personal tie-dye textiles, which happens during the first few days of our two-week program. We believe there is a lesson to be learned through the process of tie-dye. As women, we tend to bind up our hurts, our worries, and our regrets—not knowing that tying off or binding up our emotions affects the very fabric of our being. Each rubber band tied represents our struggles and our trauma, from abuse to divorce, from bullying to personal identity. Once we begin to unbind the fabric and share our stories in a safe space, we find that whether we are in the Bay Area or Uganda, we all have a story to tell.

BayGanda girls in Uganda also participate in a Sew What Camp experience that serves as a creative outlet during their education journey and helps them to develop skills that will lead to greater economic independence. The lives and hearts of our girls in the Bay Area and Uganda are intertwined through a mutual passion for creative expression and a desire to develop entrepreneurial skills to achieve a better life.

CAMPER FEEDBACK

My three daughters attended the sewing camp this past year. Not only did they learn so much about sewing, they also had so much fun making friends and enjoying the encouraging atmosphere that Erica and her team created. It was a wonderful experience for my girls, and I’d highly recommend the camp to anyone who is considering it. Yay, sewing camp!

I started Sew What camp when I was 7 years old, and I’ve participated every summer for the past eight years. I joined because my mom signed me up for the camp. One of my favorite memories at the camp is walking to get $1 ice cream with the other girls and competing in our annual paper competition. It’s the best camp I’ve ever participated in!
